I made a little one page zine that you can download, print and distribute to get the word out about the First Amendment of the Constitution. It includes the URL and a QR code to download the Constitution as a pdf for free.
On the back of the zine there is a little poster that you can color yourself.
Here are the contents of the zine:
We the People ARE PISSED
If you’re looking to push back against tyranny, the First Amendment isn’t just a polite suggestion, it’s the "Emergency Break" handle on the train of authoritarianism. It’s designed to ensure that the moment the government starts acting like a banana republic dictatorship, you have the legal infrastructure to tell them to STOP.
Freedom of Speech
Tyrants generally prefer silence. The First Amendment ensures that the government can’t legally gag you before you start organizing. It’s your right, ney your duty to be a "disturber of the peace" when the peace being kept is actually just quiet oppression. It’s not about your right to speak but about your right to criticize the people who hold the keys to the handcuffs.
Freedom of the Press
A free press is the only thing that prevents the government from being the sole narrator of its own story. Without it, "The Truth" is whatever the person with the finger on de button says it is.
The press has the right and obligation to make public the facts tyrants rather hide. Authoritarians love to try to silence and harass the free press because they know that an uninformed citizenry is easier to control.
Freedom of Assembly
One person complaining is a "nuisance" but ten thousand people in the street is a real problem. This is the right to physically occupy space and remind the state that they are outnumbered. Tyranny relies on the illusion that everyone is alone in their dissent; assembly breaks that illusion. When authoritarians get scared by mass gatherings they use scare tactics and smearing campaigns to dissuade people from joining in.
Freedom of Petition
While it feels like yelling into a void, a petition is a formal notice of grievance. It’s the paper trail that proves you tried to do things the nice way. When the government ignores a petition, they lose their last shred of "we didn't know the people were unhappy" deniability.
Petition the government ca take several forms., from sending letters, gathering signatures, making calls to showing up to the office of a government representative.
Freedom of Religion
This isn’t just about where you go on Sunday. It’s the principle that there is a place inside your head where the state is not allowed to enter. It’s the right to believe and practice the religion of your choosing, or not to have a religion or religious belief.
The founding fathers understood that freedom of religion can only exist if the state never interferes in any way.
REALITY CHECK!!!!
The First Amendment is a shield, not a cloak of invisibility. It is supposed to stop the government from making a law that silences you, but it doesn't stop them from trying to make your life difficult through other means like selective enforcement, administrative delays and even breaking the law outright. The Founders knew that if you can't talk, you can't think, and if you can't think you're already ruled.
The Founding Fathers, imperfect as they were, wanted people to have the power to fight tyranny, so they added a few amendments to THE CONSTITUTION. They may seem simple but they hold great power and every one should know what they are.
